Summer Trip 2011
Day 1-May 30
After months of preparation we are finally ready to hit the road. The camper is loaded with everything we can think of that we may even remotely need. I am sure we will discover something that we have forgotten, but that is what Walmart is for. All of the last minute stuff has been done and at 10:06 a.m. we pull out of the driveway. Tammy, Wylie and JayCee have come to see us off and to take those all important “This is the moment we have been waiting for” pictures.
It is a beautiful day even though it is a little hotter than I would like. The goal for our first stop is somewhere in the vicinity of Land Between the Lakes National Forest in Kentucky . Finding the lakes are no problem we just can’t locate any information about the park or camping prospects. We finally stumble upon the KenLake Resort in Aurora , KY and that is where we decide to set up for our first night out. Sounds easy enough, right? The guy that runs the campground took us on a short tour so that we could pick out a site. The only stipulation was that a few of the sites are reserved and we had to make sure that we chose one that wouldn’t be needed until after we left. No problem! Jess did his truck driving thing and got the trailer backed in perfectly. I was just slightly nervous because it was aimed in a downhill direction for the lake, but he assured me the chock blocks would hold. After working diligently to get the camper as level as possible it was time to hook up the power and get this thing cooled off. Great idea if the electrical cord had been just a few feet longer or the longer one had had the correct end on it. No problem we just put everything back together and picked up the camper to move to the next site. This one is perfect the power line works, the water hose connects, and after precariously driving onto some two by fours Jess brought along the camper is actually quite level. The pullout comes out for the second time, the air is running and we are off to find some supper and a grocery store. That accomplished we arrive back at the campground and Jess parks the truck off the road in front of this little post thing that we had not noticed when we were parking. Guess what the site is reserved and the occupants are scheduled to arrive 5/31. It is know about 9:00 p.m. on a very long first day, what to do? Do we just go to bed assuming we will be up long before the other campers arrive so that we can get out of their way, or do we pull up stakes and move again. Well it is our first day out and we all know that practice makes perfect. In goes the slide, unplug the power, disconnect the water, and hook back up. I think we are in competition with the NASCAR Pit Crews, we get this done faster each time. Just a couple of little issues this time. The water hose won’t reach (should have bought a longer hose) and we are definitely listing to the right. The water seems more important to Jess because he really planned to see h if he could squeeze in a shower before the hot water ran out. Time to fill our five gallon water jug and pour it into the tank. No problem, sure. We filled it three times and the pump still would not work. Thought maybe because we were listing the pump wasn’t able to pick up any water out of the tank. Have a picture of Jess laying on the floor in front of the sink trying to figure out why the pump wouldn’t work. No luck, time to give up and heat a little water for a quick wash up and give up for our first day. Jess didn’t seem to mind that it was going to be his job to keep me from rolling off the bed. We started out on site 67, we are now on site 69.
