Day 8-June 6
We are on the road again as we work our way to Valentine, NE where we plan to do some more canoeing and hopefully some fishing. The scenery changes dramatically as we enter the Sandhills area of Nebraska. It looks like miles and miles of sand dunes covered with grass. According to what we have read about this unique terrain the soil is so sandy here that it won't sustain crops so the hills have been left to grow short grasses. So all of the farmland we have been driving through has now become ranch land for cows and horses. We arrived in Valentine about 4:00 p.m. and started searching for a campground with power. (According to the thermometer in the truck it was 105 degrees as we arrived in town, the air conditioner is a must.) We finally found a full service campground just north of town. Unfortunately Fishberry Campground is on the top of a basically treeless hill and there was a storm brewing just as we got set up. This was our first experience with bad weather in the camper and I wasn't sure how much wind it would take. Luckily while the storm produced heavy rain, strong winds and hail it didn't last long and we survived it without a scratch. You can see how beautiful the sunset was after the storm passed. I was really excited to find out we would have wi-fi here so that I could catch up with everyone. It was fun talking to Melinda and the boys on SKYPE and playing a game of checkers on-line with Brady, even though he did beat his Grandmother.
